Back Pain Q & A

What causes back pain?
Your back is a complex body part containing bones, joints, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, muscles, and nerves that work together to support the weight and mobility of your upper body.

In most cases, back pain occurs from an injury or disease that affects one or more of the components that make up your back. The most typical causes of back pain include:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Herniated disc
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal nerve compression
  • Osteoporosis
  • Fractures
  • Skeletal irregularities

You may develop back pain after an acute injury, such as a bad fall or heavy lifting. Or your pain may develop because of degenerative changes that affect the structure and function of your spine as you get older.
What are the symptoms of back pain?
Back pain symptoms vary in type and severity and may depend on the underlying cause of your discomfort. Common symptoms include:

  • Dull muscle ache
  • Sharp, shooting pain
  • Pain that radiates into your arms or legs
  • Pain that worsens when you bend, twist, or flex your back
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tingling or numbness in the legs

Most people have acute back pain, and their symptoms resolve within a few days or a few weeks. However, if your back pain

lasts 12 or more weeks, you have chronic back pain.
When should I seek medical help for back pain?
Though you may be able to manage acute back pain with at-home care, the team at Salina Ortho recommends you schedule an appointment if your pain is severe or it’s getting worse.

You should also seek medical help for your back pain if the pain is chronic or causing numbness, burning, or tingling sensations in your arms or legs.

When you come in for a back pain consultation, the team conducts a thorough evaluation to find the underlying cause of your discomfort. Salina Ortho has on-site diagnostic imaging, which helps your provider get a diagnosis quickly.
How is back pain treated?
The team at Salina Ortho takes a patient-centered approach to care. Treatment for your back pain may depend on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Over-the-counter pain medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Epidural injections
  • Steroid injections
  • Facet blocks

The team schedules regular follow-up appointments and adjusts your treatment as needed.

For relief from your back pain, call Salina Ortho, or request an appointment online today.
